NME Preview New Album
27/06/08 17:34
The Verve
have completed recording their comeback album "Four"
- and have given NME an exclusive listen before
they've even finalised the tracklisting.
The band recorded 12 new songs in Richmond, southwest London, and having mixed the album, Richard Ashcroft and co are now deciding on a running order of 10 songs. Here are just a few of the stand-out tracks which we listened to last week.
'Sit And Wonder' and Love Is Noise', both of which the band have played live since reuniting, are included. The former is a much tougher proposition than the fledgling effort the group performed last year. The latter, which stunned festival-goers at Coachella in March with its high-energy dance vibe, will be the bands' comeback single.
The other new songs find The Verve mixing Ashcroft's structured 'Urban Hymns' balladry with freeform sonic storms inspired by Nick McCabe's guitar.
'Rather Be' is a piano-led track about redemption, brought to life by ambient guitars, Ashcroft's croon on the mellow 'Valium Skies' provides a lighter-in-the-air moment and 'Mona Lisa' is The Verve's most conventional song ever - a glam-rock stomper not unlike Slade's 'Cum On Feel The Noize'.
However, the album also regenerates their pre-1995 space-rock jams like 1992's 'Gravity Grave'. 'Mama Soul' boasts a classic old-school Verve groove, over which the atmospheric guitars and Ashcroft's vocals intertwine hypnotically. 'Noise Epic' is an ever-growing wall of static, held together by a 'Day Tripper'-esque bass riff. 'Numbness', meanwhile, sees the band melding trademark raw emotions with a spiralling, bluesy jam.
Other tracks that are in contention for the album, due out in August, include 'Judas', 'Appalachian Springs' and 'Columbo'.

Nick: 'Songs Are Made For Stadiums'
27/04/08 14:41
The Verve
gave their first US performance in 10 years at the
Coachella Festival last night (April 25), and NME.COM
caught up with guitarist Nick McCabe before their
set.
Talking about the new album the newly reunited band have been working on, McCabe said that it is "tailor-made for stadiums" and has a lot in common with their 1997 album 'Urban Hymns'.
"It's the best thing we've ever done," McCabe said. The band, who reunited for a handful of UK shows late last year, have been hard at work on the follow-up to 'Urban Hymns' for the past few months.
McCabe said that they had originally intended to release the new album in May, but are now aiming for an August release due to some unexpected delays.
The Verve will likely announce additional US tour dates in September, McCabe said, adding that they've all grown as musicians and it feels better than ever to be playing together again.
However, the legendary guitarist did admit to some pre-show jitters before taking the stage at the California desert festival.
"My knees might go a bit wobbly when I see a few thousand people out there," he said.

The Verve Speak Out
19/02/08 21:02
Following
last weeks announcement that The Verve will headline
this year's Glastonbury Festival, the veteran rockers
spoke to NME.COM.
Referring to their closing slot on Sunday (June 29), The Verve said: "Playing Glastonbury's a great opportunity to bring yet another aspect of The Verve full circle.
"We played twice in the early '90s which was great - we felt there was a uniqueness in those performances.
"We're really looking forward to playing at night at Glastonbury for the first time when you can witness the full twinkling makeshift city experience at its fucked-up best, the new tunes particularly are perfectly suited to that environment, make of that what you will. "
They added: "See you in the Krishna tent on Monday morning then."

Mystery of Verve Claims
06/02/08 23:29
A
mysterious film-maker who is producing a documentary
about indie-rock superstars The Verve has been
filming in Wigan.
The documentary maker, known only as Mark, claims to be putting together a film about the band and their origins to be screened on Channel Four, although programme developers there claim to know nothing about it.
He approached John Purnell, landlord of The Honeysuckle Pub in Poolstock, the venue of the band's now legendary first gig, and asked if the pub could feature in the film.
John said: "He contacted me out of the blue and said he was making a film about Richard Ashcroft and The Verve.
"He turned up one morning when we were having a cup of coffee and started filming outside, then he came in and introduced himself. He photographed the outside and the inside of the pub and asked me to have a little talk with him."
Having only taken over as landlord two-year-ago, John, who is from St Helens, was not around to witness the fabled gig, but he has heard plenty about it from his regular customers.
He said: "I couldn't give him too many answers about The Verve because I wasn't here, but everybody still talks about it and how it was a great night."

Verve Threaten To Withhold Next Album
15/01/08 20:14
The Verve
have joined an increasing number of artists -
including the like of Robbie Williams, Coldplay and
Paul McCartney - in a protest against their record
label EMI.
The newly reunited band is now threatening to withhold their next album until they receive assurances about the record label’s financial security.
The Verve were due to deliver their long-awaited follow-up to 1997’s 'Urban Hymns' in June. A question mark now looms over whether this release date still stands.
